Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

In 2006, we expanded our work in Mexico to include a mission in violence-ridden Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. For five years Dominican Friars, Sisters and lay counselors at Casa del Migrante provided warm meals, hot showers, clothing, and medical care to those deported and dropped off from the United States as well as to desperate migrants arriving in the dark of night, having fled their homes in southern Mexico to work in the factories of Ciudad Juarez .  We also assisted the migrants in finding work and legal means to reunite with their families. In early 2011, however, because the increasingly dangerous border- town conditions were resulting in decreasing numbers of migrants fleeing there, we turned over the buildings to the local diocese.
